But Kefalonia is more than just its breathtaking vistas. Its rich cultural heritage is palpable in every corner. For nature lovers, the island is a paradise waiting to be explored. Hiking trails lead through dense forests to breathtaking vistas, with Mount Ainos standing as a centerpiece of natural beauty. The Ainos National Park is home to the endemic Kefalonian fir tree and wildlife such as wild goats and an abundance of bird species. In every season, the island’s landscapes are alive with color, from wildflowers in spring to the golden hues of autumn.

Sami: Our Base of Exploration

Our Kefalonia journey always begins in Sami, a charming port town on the northeastern coast of the island. While we don’t stay directly in Sami, we choose private villas in the surrounding villages, where we enjoy the perfect combination of mountain breezes and sea views. Sami has become our go-to base, and though it might not be the most picturesque town on the island, it offers unparalleled convenience for exploring Kefalonia.

From Sami, it’s just a short 10-minute drive to Antisamos Beach, one of the island’s most iconic spots. With its turquoise waters, smooth pebbles, and even fish swimming close to the shore, Antisamos is a must-visit. Hollywood buffs may recognize it as one of the filming locations for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. For a unique experience, we recommend taking a tour with the Yellow Submarine, which offers two distinct boat trips:

Beyond Antisamos, Sami provides easy access to other stunning beaches and hidden coves. The drive from Sami to Agia Effimia is just 15 minutes and is dotted with small, serene bays featuring white pebbles, shaded by pine trees, and offering a quieter escape than the sandy beaches in the south.

For history lovers, Sami offers a glimpse into the past. The ruins of the ancient city of Sami include the remains of the Temple of Poseidon, while the local archaeological museum displays artifacts from Kefalonia’s prehistoric and Roman eras. Fans of maritime history can visit the small Nautical Museum located along the Sami-Argostoli road, showcasing 25 replicas of ancient ships. Open from May to October, it’s a hidden gem for boat enthusiasts.

To truly immerse yourself in Sami’s natural beauty, we recommend a visit to the nearby caves of Melissani and Drogarati. Melissani Cave, also known as the Cave of the Nymphs in Greek mythology, is a mesmerizing underground lake where sunlight creates brilliant hues of blue. For the best experience, visit around noon when the light is at its peak. Drogarati Cave, discovered 300 years ago, offers a different kind of beauty with its intricate stalactites and stalagmites.

The Sami – Asos Route: A Journey Through Kefalonia’s Beauty and History

We recommend the journey from Sami to Asos as one of the most breathtaking scenic routes in Kefalonia, perfect for those who love stunning landscapes, historical sites, and unforgettable sunsets. Starting just outside the town of Sami, the route begins at Antisamos Beach, known for its turquoise waters and natural beauty. From there, you can explore picturesque coves between the villages of Karavomilos and Agia Effimia. Among them, Agia Paraskevi stands out as the only organized beach, offering the perfect setting for a relaxing day. The beach features sun loungers placed both on the sand and in a green garden, shaded by tee-pee-style tents. You’ll also find delicious food available here, making it a great spot to spend the entire day. We recommend bringing water shoes, as the entrance to the sea is lined with large stones.

Continuing towards Agia Effimia, we encourage you to make a few stops to photograph the stunning coves along the way. The views are unforgettable, with vibrant contrasts between shady pine trees, white cliffs, and crystal-clear blue waters, while the island of Ithaca adds a dramatic touch to the horizon.

From Agia Effimia, the road winds through the mountains for about 10 kilometers before reaching the iconic Myrtos Beach. We’ve visited this beach many times, and each visit feels like stepping into a postcard-perfect paradise. Myrtos Beach resembles the most beautiful destinations in the Caribbean, Maldives, or Seychelles. Its smooth, pure white pebbles and the unreal shades of the water make it a must-see. Myrtos is also one of the best spots to witness a stunning sunset, and the descent to the beach offers panoramic views of the entire bay. However, we recommend exercising caution, as the beach is known for its strong waves.

The road from Myrtos to Asos is nothing short of spectacular, and we recommend planning your trip to arrive near sunset. The roadside viewpoints offer the perfect opportunity to pause and soak in the beauty of the golden hour. If time allows, you can extend your journey to Fiskardo, or save it for another day as we did, enjoying each town during the magical hours of sunset.

Asos, the final stop on this route, is a gem that combines charm, history, and serenity. Though only a handful of locals live here today, the village has been lovingly preserved and feels like stepping into a painting.

The name “Asos” comes from an ancient Doric Greek dialect, meaning “island.” While evidence of ancient settlements exists, the village is first mentioned in the 16th century during the Venetian occupation of Kefalonia. The Venetians fortified the area by building a castle-town to protect against invasions and pirates, and their influence can still be felt today.

We highly recommend ending your journey in Asos with a quiet dinner at one of its inviting tavernas, surrounded by an atmosphere that feels both magical and timeless.
